How to Prepare for Your Acupuncture Treatment
Preparation
No special preparation is required before your acupuncture treatment. However, it is recommended to have a light meal beforehand to ensure your comfort during the treatment.
Choosing a Practitioner
To choose the right practitioner, consider the following steps:
- Verify the practitioner’s training and credentials. Our practitioners are certified by the California Acupuncture Board (CAB).
- Interview the practitioner. Inquire about the treatment process, potential benefits for your condition, and the cost.
- Inform your primary doctor about your decision to undergo acupuncture. They may provide insights on the success rate for your condition and recommend a qualified acupuncture practitioner.
What to Expect During Your Acupuncture Treatment
Acupuncture Treatment
During your session, our licensed acupuncturists will insert very thin needles into specific points on your body with minimal discomfort.
Each practitioner at DULA WHC combines Eastern and Western medical practices. To tailor the treatment to your needs, they will ask about your symptoms, behaviors, and lifestyle. They may also examine:
- Painful areas on your body.
- The shape, coating, and color of your tongue.
- The color of your face.
- The strength, rhythm, and quality of your pulse.
Treatment Session
An acupuncture session may last up to 60 minutes, though some may be shorter. Typically, a treatment plan for a single complaint involves one or two sessions per week, with a common course of treatment spanning 6 to 8 sessions, depending on the condition and its severity.
During the Procedure
Acupuncture points are located all over the body. Sometimes, the appropriate points are far from the painful area. Your practitioner will inform you about the treatment site and whether you need to remove any clothing. A gown, towel, or sheet will be provided. You will lie on a padded table for the treatment, which includes:
- Needle Insertion: Thin needles are inserted at strategic points, usually causing little to no discomfort. A typical session uses 5 to 20 needles. You might feel a mild ache when the needle reaches the correct depth.
- Needle Manipulation: The practitioner may gently move or twirl the needles, or apply heat or mild electrical pulses to them.
- Needle Removal: Needles typically remain in place for 10 to 15 minutes while you relax. Removal is usually painless.
After the Procedure
Post-treatment, some patients feel relaxed while others feel energized. If there is no improvement in your symptoms within a few weeks, acupuncture might not be suitable for you.
Results
The benefits of acupuncture can be difficult to measure, but many find it effective for managing various painful conditions. Given its minimal side effects, acupuncture at DULA WHC is worth considering if conventional pain management methods are insufficient.
